About 2 weeks ago I tried the P1 WiMAX just after moving to this new home. The subscription was included with a week of trial period which we can return everything and get full refund of the setup cost. My friend and I decided to test the service because the TMNet Streamyx that we are currently using cost more than the WiMAX and by using Streamyx, there is also a monthly fee for the phone line that is rarely used. The WiMAX was seen as a better choice because the monthly subscription fee is only RM99 without having to pay extra for the phone line because the WiMAX use wireless service. For the first month bill, subscribers will have to pay extra for the cost of the modem which is RM199 when subscribing with 12 month contract. The modem is free with subscription of 24 month contract.
During that week, I got nothing but frustration because the connection stability was not as good as I expected. My home is just 100 meters away from the coverage are but the salesperson told me that I can still get a good connection. The speed was good only when the signal was full but it was rarely achieved. The rated download speed was 1200kbps and upload speed was 500kbps. The problem was the average upload speed that I got was only around 100kbps. The upload speed is very important because it affect the internet browsing. Most of the time the download speed was only half the rated speed and when I tried to download a file using Flashget, the maximum speed was only around 70KB/s.
A friend of mine use the same WiMAX service and his home is really in the coverage area. I tried browsing internet at his home and the speed was OK. The upload speed was still not satisfying and giving a slight delay when browsing the internet. My conclusion for the service is that the service will be good enough if the company can expand the network coverage and provide good connection stability so that every users can benefit the same quality as what they are paying for. For the time being I am still not satisfied with P1 WiMAX and my refund check has not arrived yet. I wonder when..
