Yahoo! is going to close GeoCities later this year. The exact closing date is October 26, 2009. More information about the closing can be obtained here. Yahoo! GeoCities is a free web hosting offering 15MB of space and nothing else. Different with most of newer web hosting service, GeoCities only offers space and bandwidth but have no support for SQL or phpadmin. For this reason GeoCities is limited to simple and basic website design. Further customization will require java script or css. The free service also does not allow FTP for data upload which only add more reason for users to switch to newer free hosting services. However, quite a decade ago that was the best you can get from a free hosting service. For Yahoo! fans, Yahoo! Web Hosting is being offered which is a paid hosting service and in competition with other website hosting provider.
I have been using GeoCities since 2001 when I just learned about website editing using Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 and Flash animation using Macromedia Flash 5. Both Dreamweaver and Flash are now owned by Adobe. With these two software I tried to publish my own website. GeoCities was chosen because it is free and there was still not much that I knew about internet except Yahoo! Mail and some Flash game sites. My website at GeoCities has never been completed or finished. I did everything on my own and I never received any formal education of website publishing. The first time I used Dreamweaver was in the college computer lab and it suddenly catch my interest. I just use the built-in tutorial to know how to use the software and it is quite simple. The main reason the website is not finished is because I don’t know what to fill it with. In the end, the server only becomes a reliable storage space for my files. Using email and web server as method of storage space and file transfer is quite convenient because flash drive are still too expensive and bulky.
