Malaysian oil and gas corporation, Petronas has taken a step further in motorsports by becoming the official sponsor and premium partner of the Fiat Yamaha MotoGP team. The partnership will put Petronas brand on all Fiat Yamaha team’s liveries, including on the bikes of riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo as well as team equipment and material. Petronas had been collaborating with Yamaha in motorcycle championship in the Asia Pacific region for more than eight years and the participation in the MotoGP can be considered a big step to improve it’s position in the international lubricant business. The deal will lead to the future extension of the existing business relationship in Malaysia into the South-East Asian region for the development and production of Yamalube engine oil for Yamaha OEM vehicles.
Petronas had been around in many motorsports activities with participation in rally championship, Formula 1, and World Superbike Series, Super GT and touring car championships. The company was involved in the World Superbike Series with Foggy Petronas Racing in 2006 where Petronas debut it’s owned motorcycle the FP1. Since 1997, Petronas joined Formula One after owning 40% stakes of Sauber Petronas Engineering. After Sauber Team had been bought by BMW, Petronas still continues the involvement by being the premium partner of the BMW Sauber F1 team.
Yamaha had been a really successful manufacturer and brand especially in MotoGP. Both companies has had various experiences in racing and hopefully this new partnership will help the Yamaha and Rossi to maintain both Constructors Championship and Riders Championship respectively. The new livery of the Fiat Yamaha Team riders and bikes with PETRONAS branding will be seen for the first time on Friday April 10th as the riders begin free practice for the 1st GP event – the night race in Qatar on Sunday April 12th.
