What does it means actually? Some advertising network will only accept applications from website with high Alexa traffic rank while paid review sites consider Alexa rank for pricing options. However, Alexa rank is actually not real. Alexa traffic rank is based on data accumulated by the Alexa toolbar. The problem is not everybody in the world are using the toolbar and the most significant problem is that a website can still have high ranking from data accumulated from one same toolbar just like me. Ok here’s the fact. I’m using the Alexa Sparky plugin which is the toolbar version for Firefox. By using this plugin, the traffic rank for this blog has rapidly increased to a respectable position. However, the real traffic to this blog is actually not as good as the rank. Most of the time, WordPress users will edit their blogs from their browsers. With the plugin installed, data is recorded as this blog is being opened so many time by so many people allowing me to have the good ranking. About a few days ago I set up a new website and on the first day, no ranking was available for the domain. Just after a day, the rank for the new domain was about 16 million+. A day later it became about 9 mil and now the ranking is 8 million+. How can the new domain get that rank if it still don’t have any visitors at all? It is unreliable but the rank is still being used as benchmark.

Who would use the Alexa toolbar or plugins? A history teacher who loves to read Wikipedia or a student who frequently use internet to find information might never thought about using the toolbar. In this case, tech websites or internet marketing will probably have higher ranking that other website categories because their visitors are more likely to care about traffic ranking and would consider using the toolbar or plugin. Try install the toolbar and see for yourself the change of your ranking. Take note of your ranking before and after using the toolbar and the time period. For the same excuse, other website categories will have real traffic rank because they are really based on the traffic they are having.

OK now let us look at the good part. Having a good rank will give a good first impression. By using the plugin, I know traffic rank for every websites I’m visiting. For most websites or blogs such as a blog about photography, nursery rhymes, etc., I believe the ranking is real and I can assume the contents are good based on their ranking. However, when looking at some internet marketing blogs, I wonder if the rankings are real. High rank will allow me to have higher price in a paid review site.
