Guess what? Friendster had published a new feature where everybody can view your private pictures. This might be a bug of the new feature of Friendster that allow your updates to be shared among all your friends. I haven’t checked yet if there is a setting for this “bug” to turn it on and off. Actually you still need permission to open and view the private pictures of somebody but when your friend left a comment on somebody’s private pictures, you’ll also receive the update. You can read your friend’s comment about the picture and also view the thumbnail of the private picture. The bad thing is people are using comment to send message and some of the messages were intended to be private. I noticed this when one of my friend wrote a “private comment” for a private picture of his girlfriend. Now I believe all other friends of his had read that “private comment” that was really should be private. Not only that, maybe all of his friends had also viewed the private picture of his girlfriend. What a bad luck.
Friendster might be in a rush to gain back it’s popularity that had degraded since the end of 2008. If I’m not mistaken, in December 2008, the Alexa traffic rank for Friendster was 44 but currently the traffic rank is 47. Challenges by social networks and phishing problems was some of the factors that affect it’s popularity. The latest upgrade to it’s features is by allowing users activities to be shared among friends just like what you see in Facebook. The sharing feature in Facebook is accepted widely by users since it is the standard privacy setting since the arise of it’s popularity. There is also options for Facebook users to adjust the setting to be more private and only let some specific user groups to receive their updates. Friendster might had missed something during the rush to launch something that was hoped to increase it’s popularity but if this “bug” problem is not solved, the new feature will actually decrease it’s popularity.
